How do you operate a water bus?
The captain of the vessel must hold either a Domestic Traffic Skipper’s License or a Driver’s License issued by Traficom. Obtaining these requires not only a period of training but also practical experience of 120-360 days, depending on the level of the license. Typically, the required practical experience is gained by working as a deckhand.
However, this alone is not enough; the captain must also receive practical training for the specific vessel they will operate. Water buses are unique, and their technical solutions can differ significantly from each other. Unlike cars, water buses are not standardized products, so they require specific, specialized knowledge.
Typically, in addition to the captain, there are one or two deckhands working on a water bus. For deckhands, a separate license has not been required for a few years now; instead, they must have first aid and fire-fighting training, a seafarer’s medical examination certificate, and vessel-specific onboarding.
