SUOMENLINNA

Suomenlinna is a historic sea fortress and a Unesco world heritage site. The construction of the fortress began in 1748. The purpose of Suomenlinna was to protect the Eastern border and the coast in the wars against Russia. As a result of the Finnish Civil War, the fortress was turned into a prisoner of war camp in 1918. In 1918, the fortress was taken over by the Defense Forces and renamed Suomenlinna.

The fortress is one of the most popular destinations in Finland, with about a million visitors a year. Suomenlinna also has about 800 inhabitants. The island has museums, cafés, restaurants and artisan studios. Suomenlinna hosts various events throughout the year. The island can be conveniently reached by waterbus from the Helsinki Market Square. You can find more information about Suomenlinna and its services at the links below.

Lonna is part of Suomenlinna. Lonna has been, for example, a gunpowder storehouse and a demining island. Today the island has a popular restaurant, cafe and sauna, as well as several interesting events. The only scheduled service to the island is the waterbus operated by FRS Finland from Kauppatori.
