SUOMENLINNA JA LONNA
Suomenlinna is a historic sea fortress and a Unesco world heritage site. The construction of the fortress began in 1748. The purpose of Suomenlinna was to protect the Eastern border and the coast in the wars against Russia. As a result of the Finnish Civil War, the fortress was turned into a prisoner of war camp in 1918. In 1918, the fortress was taken over by the Defense Forces and renamed Suomenlinna.
Lonna is small island between Kauppatori and Suomenlinna. Lonna is the sister island of Suomenlinna, where ships were once immune to sea mines. In 2014, the island was opened to the public.
VALLISAARI
Vallisaari is an island in Helsinki, between Suomenlinna and Santahamina. You can get to Vallisaari by waterbus from Kauppatori and the trip takes about 20 minutes. On the island you can admire the diverse nature, eat lunch and enjoy the beautiful sea view. In 2023, Vallisaari will host the Helsinki Biennale where everyone is welcome!
ISLAND HOPPING
Come on visit beautiful archipelago with the same ticket! The ticket for the Vallisaari-line is automatically also valid on Suomenlinna and Lonna waterbus line, and on the Connecting line from Kalasatama. With the same ticket you may travel between the islands the whole day using FRS Finland waterbuses. During the same day you could for instance visit Lonna for lunch, Suomenlinna for an afternoon coffee, and hike on Vallisaari – all the while enjoying the scenic view. You may also use the connecting line from Kalasatama.
ISOSAARI
Isosaari is more than 100-year-old fortress island just over half an hour boat trip from Market Square. Isosaari is one of outermost islands in the Helsinki and a culturally significant site. The sights and nature are unique. The island is close to the city but free from the sounds of the city. There are good services such as the restaurant Upseerikerho with a large terrace, two sandy beaches, three saunas, picnic areas, large lawns, good roads, clear signage, guidance and Finland´s the most demanding par-3 golf course.
ESPOO ARCHIPELAGO
FRS Finland operates the archipelago routes to Iso Vasikkasaari and Otaniemi. Espoo is a maritime city with 58 kilometers of coastline and 165 islands. You can easily explore the islands without own boat because of comprehensive scheduled traffic!
EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO CRUISE
FRS Finland operates Helsinki’s most gorgeous archipelago route between Kalasatama and Vuosaari from the beginning of May until the end of August. The Eastern archipelago route is the only water route in Helsinki which takes you from mainland to mainland and gives you an excellent view into the everyday life in the archipelago. The duration of the cruise is 1 hour 45 minutes. During you trip you will get to see parts of the archipelago unaccessible to other routed watertraffic or sightseeing boats. The route passes through the Degerö canal.
